New Terminal at YangzhouBEIJING - Jan 30/04 - SNS -- A new terminal capable of handling 550,000- metric tons (MT) of cargo annually opened this week at the Port of Yangzhou. Construction on the US$13.5 million facility started in September 2002. It is the first of several new facilities planned for the port. Yangzhou plans to soon start construction on another 30,000 ton container terminal and a 30,000 ton capacity multipurpose terminal. The economic development region in Yangzhou and the Yangzhou City Port Authority Company Limited plan to build a facility with a 2,300 square meter warehouse, a 10,000 square meter container yard, and 43-acre customs facility. Yangzhou Port handled a total of 8.6 million MT of cargo last year, up 39.9% the previous year. Container throughput totalled 136,000 TEU.
