U.K. Farm Incomes AdvanceLONDON - Jan 29/04 - SNS -- Farm incomes in the United Kingdom posted a solid increase in 2003, leaping 32% to £3.2billion compared to £2.49 billion in 2002, reaching their highest level since 1997. Data available from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) also reveals "more farmers than ever are turning to pastures new, yielding important extra income." Food and Farming Minister Lord Whitty said, "This increase in incomes is good news, especially when the increasing levels of diversification by farmers into other activities is taken into account. "We need competitive farmers and food producers. Government investment will continue to help them to improve performance, and we are working together to lay the foundations for a sustainable and profitable future for the rural economy."
