Australian Tightens Poultry MonitoringCANBERRA - Jan 28/04 - SNS -- The Australian government is monitoring the poultry industry more closely than usual in an effort to prevent the spread of avian influenza (AI) from Indonesia and other Asian countries to its shores. Avian influenza due to H5N1 virus has now been confirmed in China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Cases due to a different AI virus have also been reported from Taiwan and Pakistan. Government officials stressed, "Australia only imports poultry or pet birds through a stringent quarantine process and none comes from any country with a recent history of avian influenza. Quarantine officers at airports, seaports and international mail facilities are on permanent alert for poultry products (including feathers), live birds and other avian material."
