CSIRO Scientists Work on Bird FluCANBERRA - Jan 28/04 - SNS -- CSIRO's Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) in Geelong, Victoria, is contributing to efforts in southeast Asia to contain the spread of avian influenza throughout the region. The reported outbreaks - in South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan and Japan - have devastated chicken flocks and killed at least 12 people who came into direct contact with infected chickens. AAHL Director, Dr Martyn Jeggo, says scientists around the world are concerned that the avian influenza strain could mutate to allow human-to-human transmission thereby potentially leading to the world's next major influenza pandemic.
