Ag Canada Sees Lees Area, More Crop in 2004VANCOUVER - Jan 23/04 - STAT -- Agriculture Canada is looking for total specialty crop production to increase 8% in 2004 to 3.97 million metric tons (MT), even though it believes total seeded area will be down at least 4% as an increase for lentils is more than offset by decreases for dry peas, dry beans, mustard seed and sunflower seed. "It is assumed that precipitation will be normal for the winter, spring and summer," Agriculture Canada said. "However for western Canada, due to the current dry conditions in most areas, yields are forecast to be below trend but, in general, higher than in 2003-04.
