Net Decline in 2003 Forage ProductionWASHINGTON - Jan 12/04 - SNS -- The United States experienced a net decline in forage production in 2003, according to data contained in the USDA's final crop report for 2003. Eight States participate in the forage estimation program, which measures annual production of forage crops, with an emphasis on total alfalfa production. Acres, yield, and production are reported for haylage and greenchop together, and for total forage production. Haylage and greenchop production is converted to 13% moisture and combined with dry hay production to derive the total forage production. Wisconsin, the leading State, harvested 1.70 million acres of all haylage and greenchop, of which 1.50 million was alfalfa. The subscriber version of the article is available by Clicking here
