Alfalfa Hay Harvest Advances 3%WASHINGTON - Jan 12/04 - SNS -- Production of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures in 2003 totaled 76.3 million tons, down 3% from the October forecast but up 3% from 2002, according to the USDA's final crop report for 2003. Harvested area, at 23.6 million acres, is slightly above the October forecast and 2% above the previous year. Yields averaged 3.24 tons per acre, down 0.10 ton from the October 1 forecast but up 0.05 ton from the 2002 yield. Growers seeded 3.12 million acres of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures during 2003. This is down 5% from the 2002 seeded acreage of 3.30 million acres. The new seedings of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures will normally be harvested for the first time in the year following planting.
