Little Change in 2003 Potato harvestWASHINGTON - Jan 12/04 - SNS -- Total 2003 U.S. potato production from all four seasons is estimated at 459 million cwt (100 pound units), virtually unchanged from 2002 but 5% above 200, according to the USDA's final crop production report for the 2003 growing season. Harvested area, at 1.25 million acres, is down 2% from last year but 2% above two years ago. The average yield, at 367 cwt per acre, is 5 cwt above last year and 9 cwt above the 2001 crop. By season, fall production declined 1% from the previous year, spring is up 5%, summer increased 7%, and winter dropped 4% from 2002.
