U.S. Maple Syrup Off 11% in 2003WASHINGTON - Jan 12/04 - SNS -- The 2003 U.S. maple syrup production totaled 1.24 million gallons, down 11% from 2002 but 18% above 2001. Compared to 2002, maple syrup production decreased in all States except Maine and Connecticut, according to the USDA's final crop production report for the 2003 growing season. Vermont led all States in production with 430,000 gallons, a decrease of 14% from last season. Vermont syrup production accounted for 54% of New England's production and 35% of the total United States production. Maine was second with 265,000 gallons, up 15% from 2002. New York's production, at 210,000 gallons, decreased 19% from last year. In Massachusetts and New Hampshire, production was down 22% and 24%, respectively, from last season. Production was also down 11% in Michigan, 32% in Ohio, 13% in Pennsylvania, and 4% in Wisconsin compared to 2002. Connecticut production was unchanged from last year.
