Coffee Output in Hawaii up 16%WASHINGTON - Jan 12/04 - SNS -- Coffee production in Hawaii is estimated at 8.70 million pounds (parchment basis) for the 2003-04 season, up 16% from the previous crop year, according to the USDA's final crop production report for the 2003 growing season. Harvested area is estimated at 5,900 acres, unchanged from the 2002-03 season. Increased production from the islands of Kauai, Maui, Molokai, and Oahu more than offset lower production from the island of Hawaii. Improved cultural practices and adequate irrigation boosted production on these islands. Hawaii Island experienced dry weather during the flowering and maturing stages and production is lower as a result of the adverse weather. Harvest on Hawaii Island began earlier than usual and a shorter harvest season resulted. The subscriber version of the article is available by Clicking here
