Ginger Harvest Sinks 58%WASHINGTON - Jan 12/04 - SNS -- Hawaii ginger root production for the 2002-03 season is revised to 6.00 million pounds, down 19% from the previous estimate and 58% below the previous season, according to the USDA's final crop production report for the 2003 growing season. Harvested acreage is revised to 160 acres, 20% below the previous estimate and down 50% from a year ago. Average yields, at 37,500 pounds per harvested acre, are 17% below the previous season. Lower than expected production during the second half of the season resulted from a decline in harvested acreage and disease.
