Few Changes in Lentils

VANCOUVER - Aug 30/13 - SNS -- International lentil markets were little changed in relatively light export trading activity during the past week. Market sentiment was helped by the latest yield indications from Saskatchewan Agriculture, which suggest this year’s harvest will be smaller than Statistics Canada’s August forecast. Even so, total output is expected to be up over last year as higher average yields offset a decline in total seeded area. The harvest is advancing at a faster pace in Saskatchewan as hot and dry conditions speed up crop maturity. Saskatchewan Agriculture reckons 20% of this year’s lentil crop was in the bin by mid-week, representing about 314,000 metric tons (MT) of new crop production. Improved availability of product was reflected in lower bid levels for all classes of lentils in Canada, except medium green.

Lentil U.S. Loan Program

The USDA's Commodity Credit Corporation office sets prices to be used by country offices for determining marketing loan repayment rates. The price for 2013 and 2012 crop lentils was unchanged at U.S. $25.40 per 100 pounds in the west and $22.57 cwt for product in the east.
