United States Onion and Potato Market Trend Report

WASHINGTON - Jul 10/12 - SNS -- The latest weekly onion and potato market trend report was released by the USDA today.

ending June 23, June 30, and July 7, 2012, in that order in thousand
hundredweight (cwt) or 100,000 pound units. Expected movement is for the
period July 8-July 21, 2012.  Prices are for Monday, July 9, 2012
compared to Monday, July 2, 2012. Unless otherwise stated, sales are
F.O.B. Shipping Point Basis (including Delivered Sales, F.O.B. Shipping
Point Basis) or port of entry and extra services are included. Prices
represent open (spot) market sales by first handlers on product of
generally good quality and condition unless otherwise stated and may
include promotional allowances or other incentives. No consideration is
given to after-sale adjustments unless otherwise stated. Brokerage fees
paid by shipper are included in the price reported.



    ONIONS AND POTATOES
---ONIONS, DRY
   UNITED STATES---Shipments (including imports) 959-965*-795---The top
shipping areas for the week, in order, were San Joaquin Valley California,
Southern New Mexico, Columbia Basin Washington, Georgia and Walla Walla
Washington.  In the Market News Service weekly survey of over 21,000
individual stores, 9,247 retail stores had onions on ad (3-pound bag and per
pound of Yellow, Sweet Yellow, White and Red onions) which is a decrease of
15 percent from last week.  U.S. onion shipments for the month of June 2012
were 10,109 (400 cwt) which was an increase of 12 percent from the June 2011
total of 9,037 (400 cwt).  *revised.
   SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA---Shipments 300-369---Movement expected to
increase slightly as normal shipping schedules resume.  Trading Yellow very
active, others moderate.  Prices Yellow and White generally unchanged, Reds
lower.  Yellow Hybrid 50-pound sacks super colossal 10.00, colossal mostly
9.00, jumbo 8.00-8.50, medium 7.50-8.00; White Type 50-pound sacks jumbo
9.00-10.00, medium 9.00-10.00; Red Globe Type 25-pound sacks jumbo 10.00-
11.00, medium 9.00-10.00.  Red Flat Type 40-pound cartons jumbos mostly
18.00-20.95; 25-pound sacks jumbo 11.00-12.95, medium 7.95-10.00.  Shipments
for the month of June were 2,889 (400 cwt), a 58 percent increase from June
2011 shipments of 1,830 (400 cwt).
   SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO---Shipments 372-326-250---Movement expected to
increase slightly as normal shipping schedules resume.  Trading Yellow
active, others moderate. Prices Yellow medium higher, Red medium lower,
others generally unchanged.  Yellow Grano 50-pound sacks Super Colossal
12.00-14.00, colossal 11.00-12.00, jumbo 10.00, medium mostly 10.00; White
50-pound sacks jumbo 10.00-12.00, medium mostly 8.00; Red Globe Type 25-pound
sacks jumbo mostly 12.00-13.00, medium mostly 10.00-11.00.  New Mexico onion
shipments for the month of June 2012 were 3,041 (400 cwt) which was an
increase of 51 percent from the June 2011 total of 2,013 (400 cwt).
   VIDALIA DISTRICT, GEORGIA---Shipments 85-76---Movement expected to
decrease as more growers finish for the season.  Trading active.  Prices
higher.  Yellow Granex-Marked Sweet 40-pound carton U.S. One Special Storage
jumbo mostly 24.00, medium mostly 22.00.  Shipments for the month of June
were 1,045 (400 cwt), a 37 percent decrease from June 2011 shipments of 1,657
(400 cwt).
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON AND UMATILLA BASIN OREGON 2012 SEASON---
Shipments 21-69*-72(includes export of 10-27*-32) ---Movement expected to
increase slightly as normal shipping schedules resume.  Trading active.
Prices higher.  Yellow Hybrid 50-pound sacks jumbo 8.00-9.00, medium 8.00-
9.00. Columbia Basin onion shipments for the month of June 2012 were 464
(400 cwt) which was an increase of 68 percent from the June 2011 total of 277
(400 cwt).
   WALLA WALLA DISTRICT WASHINGTON---Shipments 17-31-26--- Movement expected
to increase slightly as normal shipping schedules resume.  Trading moderate.
Prices slightly lower.  yellow Walla Walla Sweets 40-pound cartons jumbo
16.00. Walla Walla onion shipments for the month of June 2012 were 119 (400
cwt) which was a significant increase from the June 2011 total of 49 (400
cwt).
   MEXICO CROSSINGS THROUGH SOUTH TEXAS---Crossings 41-18*-25--- Movement
expected to increase slightly as normal shipping schedules resume.  Mexican
onion crossings for the month of June 2012 were 606 (400 cwt) which was a
decrease of 48 percent from the June 2011 total of 1,159 (400 cwt).

   SAN ANTONIO-WINTER GARDEN-LAREDO DISTRICT---Shipments 77-54-3---Movement
was completed at the end of last week (July 7).  Texas onion shipments for
the month of June 2012 were 960 (400 cwt) which was an increase of 24 percent
from the June 2011 total of 772 (400 cwt).  LAST REPORT.
   PERU IMPORTS REPACKED AT VARIOUS EAST COAST SHIPPING POINTS---Shipments 0-
0-0---Movement expected to increase as more onions are expected to reach U.S.
ports by the end of current week (July 8).
---ONIONS FOR PROCESSING
   WESTERN UNITED STATES---Shipments 129-132-79--- Movement expected to
increase slightly as normal shipping schedules resume.  No prices reported.
Western U.S. onion processing shipments for the month of June 2012 were 1,623
(400 cwt) which was an increase of 2 percent from the June 2011 total of
1,598 (400 cwt).
   EASTERN UNITED STATES---Shipments 20-16-9--- Movement expected to increase
slightly as normal shipping schedules resume.  No prices reported.  Eastern
U.S. onion processing shipments for the month of June 2012 were 182 (400 cwt)
which was a decrease of 8 percent from the June 2011 total of 198 (400 cwt).
---POTATOES
   UNITED STATES---Shipments (not including imports) 1923-1913*-1499---The
top shipping states, in order, were Idaho, Kern District California,
Colorado, Columbia Basin Washington/ Umatilla Basin Oregon, and Virginia-.
The Market News Service survey of over 21,000 retail stores had potatoes on
ad last week in 13,182 a 1 percent decrease from the 13,264 stores the prior
week.  Diesel prices for the week of July 7, 2012 were 3.68, a .03 increase
from the previous week (U.S. EIA).  Shipments for the month of June were
8,250,000 cwt, a 6 percent increase from June 2011 shipments of 7,770,000
cwt.  *revised.
   UPPER VALLEY, TWIN FALLS-BURLEY DISTRICT, IDAHO---Shipments 703-753*-574
(includes export of 3-2-4)---Movement expected to increase post-holiday with
a full week of shipping.  Trading cartons fairly active at lower prices
others fairly active.  Prices cartons lower, others about steady.  Russet
Burbank U.S. One baled 5 10-pound film bags non size A 4.50-5.25, 50-pound
cartons 40-60s mostly 8.00, 70s mostly 7.75, 80s mostly 8.00, 90-100s mostly
6.00, U.S. Two 50-pound bag 6 ounce minimum mostly 5.00, 10 ounce minimum
6.00-6.50. New crop Norkotah are expected to begin harvest week ending (July
28). Old crop supplies expect to be available through month of August.
Shipments for June 2012 3,020,000 cwt, 2011 3,707,000 cwt, and 2010
3,309,000. *revised.
   KERN DISTRICT---Shipments 382-372*-294 (including export 44-40-42) ---
Movement expected to increase slightly on post-holiday week.  Trading fairly
slow.  Prices Round Red size A, Russet cartons, 50-pound sack 5-9 ounce and
size A lower, others generally unchanged. U.S. One baled 5 10-pound film bags
size A 5.50, 50-pound cartons size A Round Red mostly 7.00-8.00; Yellow Type
mostly 12.00.  Russet Norkotah U.S. One 50-pound cartons 50-70s mostly 10.00,
80s 9.00, 90-100s 8.00.  50-pound sack per cwt: 5-9 ounce mostly 12.00, size
A mostly 10.00.  Harvest of colors is winding up somewhat week-ending July 7
with fewer supplies of those varieties shipping.  Monday July 9 too few sales
of Long White to report a market. Shipments for June 2012 1,507,000 cwt, 2011
1,468,000 cwt, and 2010 1,603,000.  *revised.
   SAN LUIS VALLEY, COLORADO---Shipments 257-284-177 (including export
9-15-9) ---Movement expected to decrease on Holiday shortened week. Trading
moderate.  Prices baled and cartons slightly higher, others generally
unchanged.  Russet Norkotah U.S. One baled 5 10-pound film bags size A mostly
7.00, 50-pound cartons 40s mostly 8.50, 50s mostly 9.50, 60-70s 9.50-10.00,
80-100s mostly 10.00; U.S. Commercial bulk per cwt 9.00-10.00.  Shipments for
June 2012 1,123,000 cwt, 2011 1,114,000 cwt, and 2010 1,452,000.
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON AND UMATILLA BASIN OREGON---Shipments
188-178-162 (includes export of 47-48-36) ---Movement expected to increase as
normal shipping schedules resume.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices carton 90-
100s lower, others generally unchanged.  Russet Norkotah U.S. One 2-inch or
4-ounce minimum baled 5 10-pound film bags non size A 4.00-5.00, 50-pound
cartons 40-70s mostly 7.00-8.00, 80s 6.50-8.00, 90-100s 6.00-8.00.  Shipments
for the month of June were 804,000 cwt, a 15 percent increase from June 2011
shipments of 698,000 cwt.
   EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA---Shipments 42-94-81---Movement
expected to remain about the same.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices
lower.  50 lb sacks Round White US One size A 7.00, chef mostly
13.00; 50 lb sacks Round Red US One size A 8.00-9.00, size B
16.00-17.00; 50 lb sacks Yellow Type size A 14.00-15.00.
   CENTRAL WISCONSIN 2011 Season---Shipments 67-62-51---Movement expected to
decrease seasonally. Too few open market sales to establish a market. Expect
shipments of the 2011 crop to continue for the next few weeks. Shipments for
the month of June totaled 298,000 cwt.   This represents a 6,000 cwt decrease
from June of 2011.
   ELIZABETH CITY DISTRICT, NORTH CAROLINA---Shipments 65-45-44---
Movement expected to remain about the same.  Trading slow.  Prices
lower.  Round Red U.S. One 50 pound sacks size A 8.00-10.00, size B
14.00-18.00, tote bags approximately 2000 pounds per hundredweight size A
14.00-15.00; Round White U.S. One 50 pound sacks size A 7.00-8.00, size B
7.00, tote bags approximately 2000 pounds per hundredweight size A 14.00-
16.00; Yellow Type U.S. One 50 pound sacks size A 12.00-16.00.
   HEREFORD HIGH PLAINS TEXAS-EASTERN NEW MEXICO---Shipments 17-35-40---
Movement expected to increase sharply as Russet harvest is expected to get
underway by the end of current week (July 14).  Supplies in too few hands to
establish a market.  Shipments for June 2012 52,000 cwt, 2011 33,000 cwt, and
2010 21,000.
   KLAMATH BASIN (NORTHERN CALIFORNIA-SOUTHERN OREGON)---Shipments 29-34-32
(including export 2-0-0)---Movement expected to increase on post-holiday
week.  Trading very slow. Prices generally unchanged.  Russet Norkotah U.S.
One baled 5 10-pound film bags size A mostly 4.00, 50-pound cartons 40-70s
mostly 9.00, 80s 8.00-8.50, 90s mostly 7.00-7.50, 100s mostly 6.50-7.50.
Shipments for June 2012 143,000 cwt, 2011 121,000 cwt, and 2010 185,000.
   KANSAS DISTRICT---Shipments 0-0-0--- Movement expected to increase
sharply.  Supplies in too few hands to establish a market.  Harvest expected
to start July 11.  Rain delayed start of harvest.
   DELAWARE---Initial harvest expected to begin week of July 15th.  FIRST
REPORT.
---POTATOES FOR PROCESSING
   IDAHO---Open-market trading by processors with growers was fairly slow.
Open-market prices paid to growers for Russet Burbank potatoes, storage-run,
bulk, per cwt, less dirt, rot and green tare, F.O.B. growers storage unless
otherwise stated: Direct-to-Dehydration Quality 4.50.
   ELIZABETH CITY DISTRICT, NORTH CAROLINA---Shipments to Chippers 444-
507*-227---Movement expected to begin decreasing slightly.  Trading slow.
Prices unchanged.  Round White Atlantic 85% or Better U.S. One per
hundredweight per hundredweight contract 1 5/8" minimum 12.00-12.50; per
hundredweight open market 1 5/8" minimum 5.00-8.75.  *revised.
   FLORIDA---Shipments to Chippers 407-119-117---Movement expected to
decrease seasonally. Too few open market sales to establish a market.
Shipments for the month of June totaled 1,812,000 cwt.
   EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA---Shipments 0-0-9---Movement expected
to increase.  Current supplies insufficient to establish market.
