United States Onion and Potato Market Trend Report

WASHINGTON - Nov 1/11 - SNS -- The latest weekly onion and potato market trend report was released by the USDA today.

ending October 15, 22 and 29, 2011, in that order in thousand hundredweight
(cwt) or 100,000 pound units. Expected movement is for the period October
30-November 12, 2011.  Prices are for Monday, October 31, 2011 compared to
Monday, October 24, 2011. Unless otherwise stated, sales are F.O.B.
Shipping Point Basis (including Delivered Sales, F.O.B. Shipping Point
Basis) or port of entry and extra services are included. Prices represent
open (spot) market sales by first handlers on product of generally good
quality and condition unless otherwise stated and may include promotional
allowances or other incentives. No consideration is given to after-sale
adjustments unless otherwise stated. Brokerage fees paid by shipper are
included in the price reported.





				ONIONS AND POTATOES

				ONIONS, DRY
   UNITED STATES---Shipments (including imports) 1060*-1125*-1038---The
top shipping areas for the week, in order, were Columbia Basin Washington,
Idaho and Malheur County Oregon, Nevada, Colorado and Peru.  In the Market
News Service weekly survey of over 21,000 individual stores, 12,236 retail
stores had onions on ad (3-pound bag and per pound of Yellow, Sweet Yellow,
White and Red onions) which is a 72 percent increase from last week.

   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON AND UMATILLA BASIN OREGON---Shipments
334-361-359 (includes export of 118-110-89)---Movement expected to remain
about the same.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices generally unchanged.  Yellow
Hybrid 50-pound sacks colossal 6.00-6.50, jumbo 5.00-5.50, medium 5.00; White
50-pound sacks jumbo mostly 10.00, medium 7.00-8.00; Red Globe Type 25-pound
sacks jumbo 4.00-5.00, medium mostly 4.00.
   IDAHO AND MALHEUR COUNTY OREGON---Shipments 335-332-317---Movement
expected to remain about the same.  Trading slow.  Prices Yellow Super
Colossal, large White, and Reds generally unchanged, others lower.  U.S. One
Yellow Spanish Hybrid 50-pound sacks Super Colossal mostly 8.00, colossal
mostly 7.00, jumbo mostly 5.50-6.00, medium mostly 5.50-6.00; U.S. One White
50-pound sacks large mostly 10.00, medium mostly 9.00; U.S. One Red 25-pound
sacks large mostly 6.00, medium mostly 5.00.
   NEVADA---Shipments 56-85-100---Movement expected to remain about the same.
   NORTH AND EAST POINTS COLORADO---Shipments 68-66-59---Movement expected to
remain about the same.  Trading moderate.  Prices Yellow higher, others
generally unchanged.  Yellow Hybrid 50-pound sacks jumbo 7.50-8.00, medium
mostly 7.00-8.00; Red Globe type 25-pound sacks jumbo 7.00, medium mostly
6.00.
   WESTERN SLOPE COLORADO---Shipments 6-1-3---Movement expected to increase
as shippers start running long day onions.
   PERU IMPORTS REPACKED AT VARIOUS EAST COAST SHIPPING POINTS---Shipments
65-67-51---Movement expected to remain about the same.  Trading moderate.
Prices slightly lower. Yellow Granex-Marked Sweet 40-pound cartons jumbo
mostly 14.00-15.00.
   UTAH---Shipments 27-29-33---Movement expected to increase seasonally.
   SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA---Shipments 44-54-32---Movement expected to
decrease seasonally.  Supplies in too few hands to establish a market.
   MICHIGAN---Shipments 17-19-17---Movement expected to remain about the
same. Trading moderate. Prices unchanged. Yellow Globe type 50 pound
sacks medium 7.50-8.50, repacker size 6.50-7.50, master container 16 3-
pound mesh sacks medium 10.00-11.00, repacker size mostly 8.00-9.00.
Quality variable.
   NEW YORK---Shipments 13-15-11---Movement is expected to remain about
the same. Trading slow for light supplies. Prices unchanged. Yellow
Globe type 50 pound sacks medium 2 1/4 inch minimum 9.50-10.50, 2 inch
minimum 9.00-10.00. Wide range in size and quality.
   CENTRAL WISCONSIN---Shipments 9-6-10---Movement expected to remain about
the same. Unofficial prices for Tuesday November 1, 2011 Yellow Hybrid 16 3-
pound mesh sacks 8.00-10.75.

				ONIONS FOR PROCESSING
   WESTERN UNITED STATES---Shipments 95-85-93---Movement expected to remain
about the same.  No prices reported.
   EASTERN UNITED STATES---Shipments 15-11-17---Movement expected to remain
about the same.  No prices reported.

				POTATOES
   UNITED STATES---Shipments (not including imports) 1667*-1771*-1843---The
top shipping states, in order, were Idaho, Colorado, Columbia Basin
Washington/ Umatilla Basin Oregon, Wisconsin, and the Red River Valley
(ND/MN).  The Market News Service survey of over 21,000 retail stores had
potatoes on ad last week in 10,155 a 24 percent increase from the 8,180
stores the prior week.  Diesel prices for the week of October 31, 2011 were
3.89, which was a .06 increase from the previous week.  *revised.
   UPPER VALLEY, TWIN FALLS-BURLEY DISTRICT, IDAHO---Shipments
589-649-726 (includes export of 3-1-4)---Movement expected to remain about
the same.  Trading baled and cartons 90-100s very active, others moderate.
Prices baled and cartons 90-100s slightly higher, others generally unchanged.
Russet Burbank U.S. One 2-inch or 4-ounce minimum baled 5-10-pound film bags
non size A mostly 7.00, 50-pound cartons 40-60s mostly 10.00, 70s mostly
9.50-10.00, 80s 9.00-9.50, 90s 8.50-9.00, 100s 7.50-8.00; Russet Norkotah
U.S. One 2-inch or 4-ounce minimum baled 5 10-pound film bags non size A
mostly 7.00, 50-pound cartons 40-70s 8.00, 80-100s mostly 8.00.  Shipment by
variety for the week ending October 29, 2011 were generally Russets with 65
percent Norkotahs and 31 percent Burbanks.  Harvest is generally complete.
There were extremely cold nighttime temperatures last week (October 25 and
26), however, most growers had finished harvest before then.  Just a handful
of potatoes remain in the ground which are destined for the dehydration
market.
   SAN LUIS VALLEY, COLORADO---Shipments 291-315-305 (including export
13-11)---Movement expected to increase slightly as Thanksgiving shipments
start.  Trading baled moderate, others fairly slow.  Prices generally
unchanged.  Russet Norkotah U.S. One baled 5 10-pound film bags size A mostly
7.50-8.00, 50-pound cartons 40s 6.00-6.50, 50-60s mostly 7.00-7.50, 70s
mostly 7.50, 80-100s mostly 8.00-8.50, and U.S. Commercial bulk per cwt
mostly 9.00.

199-195-183 (includes export of 37-36-38)---Movement expected to remain about
the same.  Truck shortage curtailing movement. Trading active.  Prices baled

50-pound cartons 40-70s mostly 8.00, 80s 8.00, 90s mostly 8.00, 100s 8.00.
   CENTRAL WISCONSIN---Shipments 135-151-149---Movement expected to remain
about the same. Trading moderate.  Prices Russet baled higher, others
generally unchanged. Prices Round Red U.S. One 50-pound cartons size A 14.50-
16.00, size B 15.00-16.00, Creamers 3/4-1 5/8 inch 25.00-30.00. Russet
Norkotah U.S. One baled 5 10-pound film bags non size A mostly 8.00, 50-pound

   MINNESOTA-NORTH DAKOTA (RED RIVER VALLEY)---Shipments 67-80*-85---Movement
expected to increase seasonally.  Trading size B active, others fairly
active.  Prices size B slightly higher, others generally unchanged.  Round
Red U.S. One size A baled 5 10-pound film bags size A mostly 12.00, 50-pound
sacks size A Mostly 11.00, size B mostly 16.00-17.00, tote bags approximately
2000 pounds per cwt size A mostly 20.00.  Additional shippers are expected to
start harvesting as sugar beet harvest finishes.  *revised.
   NORTHWEST WASHINGTON---Shipments 55-75-76---Movement expected to remain
about the same. Trading fairly slow. Prices generally unchanged. Prices Round
Red U.S. One 50-pound cartons size A mostly 20.00-22.00, size B 24.00-26.00,
Creamers 3/4-1 5/8 inch 32.00-36.00; Long White U.S. One 50-pound cartons
size A 22.00-24.00, size B 14.00-16.00, Creamers 3/4-1 5/8 inch 32.00-36.00;

   NEBRASKA DISTRICT---Shipments 71-91-60---Movement expected to decrease as
one large shipper has finished. Supplies in too few hands to establish a

slightly.  Trading slow.  Prices U.S. One Russet Norkotah 10 pound film

   KLAMATH BASIN (NORTHERN CALIFORNIA-SOUTHERN OREGON)---Shipments 43-40-32
(including export 1-2-4)---Movement expected to increase seasonally. Trading
moderate. Prices baled and carton 90-100s slightly higher.  Russet Norkotah
U.S. One baled 5 10-pound film bags size A 6.50-7.00, 50-pound cartons 40-70s
mostly 9.50-10.00, 80s 8.00-9.00, 90s mostly 7.50-8.00, 100s mostly 7.25-
8.00.
   AROOSTOOK COUNTY MAINE---Shipments 11-23-31---Movement expected to
increase slightly.  Prices Round White U.S. One baled 10 5-pound sacks 2
inch minimum 9.50-10.25, 10-pound open window sacks loose 1.80-2.10,
Russet Norkotah U.S. One baled 5 10-pound film bags 2 inch or 4 ounce
minimum 8.50-9.25, baled 10 5-pound film bags 9.00-10.00.  Offerings in
few hands as most growers continue to delay packing in order to bypass
marginal lots of potatoes due to excessive moisture during the growing
season.
   LONG ISLAND---Shipments 22-22-29---Movement expected about the same.
Trading fairly slow.  Prices slightly lower.  Round White U.S. One 50
pound sacks size A mostly 9.00-9.50, large 10.00-11.00, baled 10 5-pound
sacks size A mostly 11.00-12.00.  Some table stock growers have diverted
certain varieties such as Monona to the chip market to fill contract
shortages.  Harvest curtailed Monday, October 31 due to weekend showers.
   HEREFORD HIGH PLAINS-EASTERN NEW MEXICO---Shipments 62-31-28---Movement
expected to remain about the same.  Supplies in too few hands to establish a
market.
   BIG LAKE AND CENTRAL MINNESOTA---Shipments 34-25-26---Movement expected
to remain about the same.  Supplies in too few hands to establish a market.
   SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DISTRICT---Shipments 11-8-5---Movement expected
to remain about the same.  Supplies in too few hands to establish a market.
   KERN DISTRICT, CALIFORNIA---Winter Crop Shipments 0-0-2---Movement
expected to remain about the same.  Supplies in too few hands to establish
a market. Light harvest of the winter crop has started.  More growers
expect to start harvesting the first week of December.
   NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA (Crossings Through Maine Points)---Shipments
12-**-**---Movement expected to increase.  Offerings in too few hands and
insufficient to establish a market as most growers delay packing in order
to bypass marginal lots of potatoes due to excessive moisture and disease
pressure during the growing season.  Some sheds not expected to begin
packing for the U.S. markets until early December.  **unavailable.

				POTATOES FOR PROCESSING
   IDAHO---Open-market trading by processors with growers was very active.
Open-market prices paid to growers for Russet Burbank potatoes, field-run,
bulk per cwt, less dirt, rot and green tare, F.O.B. growers storage unless
otherwise stated:  Direct-to-Dehydration field-run 6.50; French-Fry Quality
field run 1.00 over the contract price; storage out-weight contract 2.50
over the contract price.
   MICHIGAN---Shipments to Chippers 255-258*-243---Movement expected
about the same.  Most movement on pre-season contract.  Too few open
market sales to establish a market.  Remaining few growers continue
harvest at a slower pace due to showers and cooler temperatures which
have limited digging hours per day. *revised.
   WISCONSIN---Shipments to Chippers 157-134*-182---Movement expected to
remain about the same. Too few open market sales to establish a market.

   WESTERN AND CENTRAL NEW YORK---Shipments to Chippers 76-74-70---
Movement expected about the same.  Most movement on pre-season contract.
Too few open market sales to establish a market.  Some table supplies
have been diverted to chip plants to fill contract shortages.
   MAINE---Shipments to Chippers 62-34-46---Movement expected about the
same.  Most movement on pre-season contract.  Too few open market sales
to establish a market. Harvest generally completed.
    MINNESOTA-NORTH DAKOTA (RED RIVER VALLEY)---Shipments to Chippers
33-31-46---Movement expected to remain about the same. Too few open market
sales to establish a market.
   PENNSYLVANIA---Shipments to Chippers 30-29-16---Movement expected
about the same. Most movement on pre-season contract.  Too few open
market sales to establish a market.
   OHIO---Shipments to Chippers---Shipments 1-6-2---Movement expected
