South Africa Reduces Edible Bean Estimate

PRETORIA - Sep 27/11 - SNS -- Dry edible bean production in South Africa ended up smaller than thought in the face of worsening yields across the country, according to the latest crop report from the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

Production for the winter crop cycle for the 2010-11 marketing year ended up at 41,900 metric tons (MT) from 41,900 hectares. This is the smallest edible bean crop since 2007 and the third smallest since 1990 -- the last time production was over 100,000 MT.

Reduced dry edible bean harvests are expected to result in greater import demand by the country. China should benefit the most from this because its speckled beans remain among the most competitively priced in the world.
