Canada's Pea Crop Potential Improves

VANCOUVER - Sep 16/11 - SNS -- Canada's field pea crop could end up bigger than initially expected, if regional yield estimates from Saskatchewan Agriculture are borne out by Statistics Canada.

The provincial data suggests yields will average 2,164 pounds per acre, compared to the official August forecast of 2,075 pounds and last year's 1,829 pound average.

The quality of the crop is also up significantly from last year. After a slow start, the weather was unusually cooperative for much of the growing season and the harvest.
