Frost Hits Chickpeas Hard

VANCOUVER - Sep 15/11 - SNS -- Killing frosts reported in most parts of Saskatchewan at the start of the week are believed to have caused widespread damage to this year's Canadian chickpea crop.

In its weekly crop progress report, Saskatchewan Agriculture estimated 28% of the province's chickpeas were harvested before the frost struck.

Harvest progress for other pulses was significantly higher, with an estimated 92% of the lentils and 94% of the peas harvested before the frost struck. More importantly, a large part of what remained to be harvested was ready to straight combine of lieing in swath. The implication is less than 4% of the lentils and less than 3% of the peas could have been damaged.
