More Than The Usual Number of Surprises

VANCOUVER - Sep 7/11 - SNS -- Canada's ending stocks estimates for the 2010-11 marketing year contained more surprises than expected, including several revisions to crop production and ending stock estimates for previous years for some pulses and specialty crops.

Statistics Canada increased its production estimates for canaryseed grown in 2009 and 2010 and last year's field pea crop. Revisions were also made to last year's field pea, lentil and canaryseed ending stocks estimates.

The net result is this summer's carry over is more than expected for most pulses and specialty crops. This is reflected in the fact total ending stocks for the six crops in this category reached a record 1.5 million metric tons (MT). This is up from 1.167 million last year and well above the previous July 31, 2006 record of 1.345 million MT.
