Sharp Drop in Grain SorghumWASHINGTON - Aug 11/11 - SNS -- Sorghum production in the United States is forecast at 241 million bushels, down 30% from last year, according to the USDA's latest crop production forecast. If realized, this will be the smallest production since 1956. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 4.39 million acres, down 4% from the previous forecast and down 9% from 2010. If realized, this will be the lowest harvested acreage level since 1936. Based on August 1 conditions, yield is forecast at 54.8 bushels per acre, down 17 bushels from last year. As of July 31, the sorghum crop was 42% headed, 9 points behind last year and 7 points behind average. Prolonged drought conditions and high temperatures in July have negatively impacted the crop throughout the Southern Plains. Forty-four% of the crop was rated in very poor to poor condition compared with only 5% at this time last year. Subscribers can read the full text of the article by Clicking here
