Tension in Chickpea Markets

VANCOUVER May 13/11 - SNS -- International chickpea markets finished the week's trading under tense trading conditions.

Short crops in Mexico and the unwillingness of farmers in the United States and Canada to expand acreage is helping keep values for kabuli type chickpeas firm.

The entire U.S. crop is effectively spoken for by domestic buyers; while production in Canada is expected to decline as farmers opt for less risky crops.
