Uneasiness Pervades Lentil Market

VANCOUVER - Oct 15/10 - SNS -- International lentil markets finished the week's trading under uneasy trading conditions, with significant differences in asking prices among exporters.

Uneven quality in the Canadian harvest is reflected in significant variation in color and other grading factors within grades. This has some exporters believing that they will need to return to selling on a sample approval basis in some markets, especially for lower grade product.

For its part, the Canadian Grain Commission is urging farmers to carefully sample lentils in their bids and to get several opinions about the grade before marketing this year's crops.

That makes sense because of the possibility prices paid for a specific grade of lentil will vary depending on the overall quality of the product in the farmer's bin.
