VANCOUVER - Sep 24/10 - SNS -- Canada's lentil harvest is expected to be in full swing before the weekend is over, with some market participants expecting it to be virtually complete within 10 days if there is no rain.
While the resumption of the harvest settles one issue for markets, the questions of the mix of quality and average yields will continue to be debated.
The question will not be easily settled. There should be huge differences in quality and yield from one field to the next.
The final outcome will depend on a myriad of factors: whether crops were flooded; green when the frosts hit; how much and how virulent the plant diseases became; did thick foliage offer any protection from rain damage; were crops hit by late hail; or swarmed by migrating birds and foraging deer.
