Illinois Certification SubsidizedSPRINGFIELD - May 5/03 - SNS -- Organic growers and handlers in Illinois now can recover part of the cost of their USDA certification. The Illinois Department of Agriculture has been notified it will receive $40,000 to provide reimbursements to producers and handlers who either obtain or renew their certification in the federal fiscal year that ends Sept. 30, 2003. The reimbursements will cover 75% of certification costs up to a maximum of $500. The funds will be distributed to eligible recipients in the order their applications are returned. However, there is a limit of one reimbursement per farm. The assistance comes from the National Organic Certification Cost-Share Program. The Illinois Department of Agriculture will start processing claims when the funds are received, which is anticipated after May 1, 2003.
