Sweet Cherry Harvest PlungesWASHINGTON - Jun 10/10 - SNS - The combined 2010 sweet cherry production for California, Oregon, and Washington is forecast at 295,000 tons, down 24% from 2009 but 36% above 2008, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. Washington's production is forecast at 160,000 tons, down 35% from the previous year. The crop has fallen behind on maturity due to cool, wet weather this spring. Oregon's 2010 sweet cherry production is forecast at 45,000 tons, down 33% from 2009. Cold, wet weather conditions hindered bloom, pollination, and growth. California's production is forecast at 90,000 tons, up 15% from 2009. Spring weather generated occasional rain and cool temperatures during the critical development of the crop. A strong bloom was underway in March. Subscribers can read the full text of the article by Clicking here
