Modest Drop in Citrus ForecastWASHINGTON - Dec 10/09 - SNS -- There has been a modest decline in citrus fruit crop prospects since the October crop report, the production for oranges, tangerines and mandarins slipping, while grapefruit in unchanged, according to the USDA. Orange production in the United States for the 2009-10 season is now expected to total 8.20 million tons, down 1% from the October 1 forecast and down 11% from the 2008-09 final utilization. The forecast of the 2009-10 U.S. grapefruit crop is 1.21 million tons, unchanged from the October 1 forecast but down 9% from the 2008-09 final utilization. Florida's grapefruit production is forecast at 19.8 million boxes (842,000 tons), unchanged from the October forecast but 9% below last season. The Florida all white grapefruit forecast is 5.80 million boxes (247,000 tons), down 12% from the previous year. The colored grapefruit forecast, at 14.0 million boxes (595,000 tons), is 7% lower than last season. Size and drop of both varieties are expected to be below average at harvest.
