Chickpeas Only Surprise in Crop ReportVANCOUVER - Dec 4/09 - SNS -- The only number which was somewhat of a surprise in the past week's production estimates from Statistics Canada were those for chickpeas. When surveyed about this year's seeding intentions, western Canadian farmers indicated they planned to seed 147,000 acres of chickpeas. After planting, surveys indicated they actually planted 175,000 acres; but in its final report for the year, Statistics Canada slashed its area estimate to just 105,000 acres.
