Massive Jump in U.S. Lentil HarvestWASHINGTON - Nov 10/09 - SNS -- This year's lentil harvest in the United States is officially pegged at 5.83 million cwt (100 pound units) or 264,311 metric tons (MT), up 144% from last year, according to the latest crop production estimates from the USDA. Acreage, yield, and production increased in all four program States. Area for harvest is forecast at 405,000 acres, up 55% from the previous year. Average yield is expected to be 1,439 pounds per acre, up 522 pounds per acre from 2008. North Dakota's production is forecast at 2.54 million cwt or 115,350 MT, more than three times greater than a year ago. Harvested area increased 81% from 2008, while yields increased by 640 pounds per acre to 1,560. Crop condition was rated mostly good throughout the entire growing season.
