Pecan Market Update for LouisianaBATON ROUGE - Oct 27/09 - SNS -- Pecan market conditions in the state of Louisiana are summarized in this report from the USDA. Provided by: Fruit and Vegetable Market News Federal-State Market News Service, USDA. Phone: (229) 228-1208 Fax: (229) 225-1516 BO_FV140 LOUISIANA PECAN REPORT (via Thomasville, Georgia) Deliveries by growers have been very light. Rain and wet conditions in the orchards have prevented growers from entering the fields and harvesting. Rain is expected to continue today and through the weekend. Accumulation buying points reported only very light offerings of yard trees, primarily that of Natives/Seedling and some Improved varieties of Candy, Elliott, Mahan, Moore, Stuart and a few Desirables. A wide range of quality of nuts are being offered for sale, with many being turned away at the door for various reasons. Those with a high moisture content are being spread out to dry in order to salvage the nuts for future sales, while others are too damaged to recover. Growers are hoping that a break in the weather will come in time so that the remaining nuts still on the trees will be able to be shaken and harvested. Demand was slow with buying interest primarily from the giftpack sector looking for lots with fairly high quality and appropriate unit count. Most of the nuts that were previously harvested are being offered for retail sales instead of going to the commercial shellers for sale, causing a gap in available offerings. Prices paid to growers (Thursday October 22nd through Tuesday October 27th,2009) at buyers delivery point or f.o.b. the orchard including direct sales to end users, cents per pound in-shell of generally good quality in lots of 20,000 pounds or less unless otherwise stated. Elliott (deliveries very light) yard tree lots of generally good quality 50, fair quality 35 Mahan (deliveries very light) yard tree lots of generally good quality 45-50, fair quality 35 Natives (deliveries very light) yard tree lots of generally good to fair quality 35-40, Stuart (deliveries very light) yard tree lots of generally good quality 50-70, fair quality 35 Success (deliveries insufficient to establish market) NEXT REPORT WILL BE ISSUED OCTOBER 29, 2009 --- STAT News Service
