Cattle on Feed Rises 1 Percent in U.S.WASHINGTON - Oct 16/09 - SNS -- Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head quantityed to 10.5 million head on October 1, 2009, according to today's USDA update. The inventory was 1% above October 1, 2008. The inventory included 6.42 million steers and steer calves, down 1% from last year. This group accounted for 61% of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 4.01 million head, up 4% from 2008. Placements in feedlots within September totalled 2.39 million, 5% above 2008. Net placements were 2.34 million head.
