Australia -- Victoria Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 5/09 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

for the period until midnight EDT Friday 9 October 2009.
Warning Summary at issue time
FINAL FLOOD WARNING FOR THE LATROBE RIVER.
Warning to sheep graziers for the West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland
forecast districts.
Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between Wilsons Promontory and 60nm
east of Gabo Island.

telephone 1300-659-217* or through some TV and radio broadcasts.
Weather Situation
A high pressure system south of the Bight will extend a ridge southeastwards on
Tuesday resulting in a cold southerly airflow across Victoria. At the same time
an upper level trough will cross Victoria, leading to the development of a low
pressure system off the southern New South Wales coast on Wednesday. The low
will then slowly move east over the Tasman Sea on Thursday then the high
pressure system will approach southern Tasmania late Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated showers in southern and eastern areas, more widespread about the
eastern ranges with isolated thunderstorms. Moderate to locally fresh
southwesterly wind.
Forecast for Tuesday
Scattered showers over southern and mountain areas tending to rain areas over
the southeast during the day. Isolated showers developing on the northern
plains. Local hail and thunder and snowfalls developing down to 800 metres.
Cold with southerly winds gradually freshening.
Forecast for Wednesday
Rain areas and local thunderstorms in the southeast with heavy falls possible
in East Gippsland. Showers across remaining southern and eastern districts but
fine over the northwest. Local hail contracting eastwards. Cold with snowfalls
down to around 800 metres and fresh to locally strong southerly winds.
Forecast for Thursday
Local morning frost inland. Scattered showers in southern and mountain areas,
more widespread in the east. Local hail in the far east. Snowfalls down to 1000
metres. Cold with a fresh southerly wind.
Forecast for Friday
Isolated showers in southern and mountain areas, scattered in the southeast.
Snowfalls above 1000 metres. Cool to cold with moderate south to southeasterly
winds, fresh at times near the coast.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 5:00 am EDT Tuesday.
