Lentil markets Volatile
VANCOUVER - Oct 4/09 - SNS -- North American chickpea markets were little changed in relatively light trade during the past week.
Markets were unaffected by the forecast size of this year's chickpea crop. Statistics Canada pegged the Canadian harvest at 127,800 metric tons (MT) from 175,000 acres; up from 81,000 MT from 140,000 acres last year.
Production estimates for small acreage crops such as chickpeas can change dramatically from one report to the next. Such was the case last year, with Statistics Canada slashing its production estimate in its final report in December.
