Saudi Barley Import Growth SeenRIYADH - Mar 24/03 - STAT -- Saudi Arabia is expected to record a small increase in total imports during the coming 2003-04 marketing year, according to the U.S. agricultural attache here. This is expected to be the case even though the Saudi Arabian government is reducing the amount of support given the barley sector by no longer buying locally produced barley from farmers. Growers had expected to sell the coming crop to government buyers at $267.67 per metric ton (MT) starting from the 2003-2004 production season. The change is expected to have little impact on growers because most do not find the government purchase price attractive. Demand for imported barley this year is expected to remain strong due to below average pasture conditions resulting from meager rainfall so far this season and the increased livestock imports from major supplying countries (Sudan, Jordan, Syria and Australia.) Imports could climb from an estimate 5.73 million MT this season to around 5.84 million The subscriber version of the article is available by Clicking here
