Australian Wheat Shipments to Iraq on HoldSYDNEY - Mar 20/03 - SNS -- With the outbreak of war in Iraq, the Australian Wheat Board (AWB) has suspended discharge of wheat in Iraq. Australia, which has also committed troops to military action in the war, hopes that will be taken into account by Washington in the port war period and that no attempt will be made by the United States to increase its share of the Iraqi market at the expense of Australian wheat. That this is a concern was made clear by an Australian Broadcasting Corporation interview with U.S. wheat industry lobbyist, Barbara Spangler. "The US has made a certain number of commitments to helping restructure, reorganize however you're gonna call it, in Iraq, and part of that we would hope would be getting back the market share that we have had in the distant past, because it was a very important market."
