Australia -- Victoria Weather UpdateMELBOURNE - Aug 27/09 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology. for the period until midnight EST Monday 31 August 2009. Warning Summary at issue time Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between Cape Otway and 60nm east of Gabo Island. Details of warnings are available on the Bureau's website www.bom.gov.au, by telephone 1300-659-217* or through some TV and radio broadcasts. Weather Situation A cold front will move through Bass Strait today just clipping the coast, while a low pressure system developing over South Australia will approach northwest Victoria later. The low will move southeastwards across the State on Saturday ahead of a cold front which will sweep in from the west. The front will clear the State by early Sunday, but another front will move through Bass Strait on Monday. A ridge of high pressure will move from South Australia towards Victoria on Monday. Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated showers in the southwest and about the coast. Areas of rain developing over the northwest during the afternoon and extending southeastwards across the State in the evening and at night. The chance of isolated thunderstorms in the northwest. Cool to mild with moderate north to northwesterly winds. Forecast for Saturday Areas of rain, with possible heavy falls over the northeast ranges, tending to showers from the west. Isolated thunderstorms. Isolated hail in the southwest later. Snow falls developing above 1600 metres at night. Cool with moderate northwesterly winds strengthening ahead of a gusty southwesterly change extending across the State during the day. Forecast for Sunday Isolated showers mainly over southern and mountain districts, tending to contract to the southwest and along the coast during the afternoon. Local hail and thunder possible near the coast in the morning. Cool. Fresh west to southwest wind moderating and tending northwesterly. Forecast for Monday Scattered showers developing over southern and mountain areas from the west, mostly near the coast. Cool with fresh northwesterly winds shifting west to southwesterly and gradually moderating.
