Australia -- Victoria Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 11/09 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

for the period until midnight EST Saturday 15 August 2009.
Warning Summary at issue time
Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between SA-VIC Border and Mallacoota.
Details of warnings are available on the Bureau's website www.bom.gov.au, by
telephone 1300-659-217* or through some TV and radio broadcasts.
Weather Situation
A low pressure system over east Bass Strait will drift slowly southwestwards
today then move southeastwards on Thursday to be located east of Tasmania by
Thursday night. Meanwhile, a high pressure ridge will hold over northern
Victoria until Friday while cold fronts weaken as they cross the Bight. On
Saturday the high will drift eastwards as a stronger cold front enters the
Bight.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Rain areas over Gippsland, mainly coastal and contracting east during the day.
Chance of a thunderstorm over East Gippsland. Scattered showers elsewhere
mainly on and south of the divide, although becoming isolated in the west. Fine
in the northwest. Snow on the Alps above 1400 metres. Moderate northeast to
northwesterly winds in the east, tending southeast to southwesterly from the
west.
Forecast for Thursday
Scattered showers in southern and mountain areas, becoming isolated and
contracting to the east ranges and the coast during the day. Snow on the Alpine
peaks. Fine in the northwest. Cool with fresh southwest winds about the
Gippsland coast at first but light to moderate west to northwest winds
elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
Isolated showers clearing about the east ranges and the coast. Snow clearing on
the Alpine peaks. Mild with light to moderate west to northwest winds.
Forecast for Saturday
Fine throughout apart from the chance of a late shower over the far southwest.
Mild with freshening northwest winds, strengthening in the west towards evening.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Wednesday.
