India's Pulse Imports on UptrendVANCOUVER - Jul 27/09 - SNS -- Pulse production in India ended up around 14.66 million metric tons (MT) in 2008-09, down 100,000 tons from the previous season, but above the recent five-year average harvest of 14.072 million MT. Even though output is remaining ahead of the recent average, India's import needs are growing -- not only with the annual increase in the size of the country's population, but with increases in average income levels in the country. By some estimates, there are as many middle class Indians as there are citizens in Canada and the United States. This has important implications for pulses because it is changing India from being a market where price defines annual imports to one where quality, service and variety are more important factors.
