Quiet Tone in ChickpeasVANCOUVER - Jul 3/09 - SNS -- International chickpea markets remain relatively quiet during the past week, with buyers in some of the world's major markets starting to get into summer holiday mode. The latest USDA seeded area estimates did not help clarify the supply situation for chickpeas in North America. The first break down of seeded area by class of dry edible bean for the United States will be released on August 12. At that point, the chickpea estimates are expected. Markets were unaffected by the latest USDA stocks in all positions data for chickpeas. The June 1 inventory estimate discovered there were 491,000 cwt (100 pounds units) or 22,272 metric tons (MT) of chickpeas on hand, up from 298,000 cwt or 13,517 MT last year.
