Alsen Eligible for Milling Grades Until July 31WINNIPEG - Mar 11/03 - SNS -- The Canadian Grain Commission reminded companies and growers that the interim registration for Alsen, a variety of hard red spring wheat, expires March 27, 2003 and the grain will only be eligible for the top three grades of Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat until July 31. Last month, the Prairie Registration Recommending Committee for Grain (PRRCG) defeated a motion to recommend extending interim registration for Alsen. Consequently, interim registration for Alsen will expire March 27, 2003, making it ineligible for milling grades. The CGC decided to maintain Alsen's eligibility for milling grades to the end of this crop year to enable farmers who had planted it last year to deliver existing stocks without penalty. "Farmers who planted Alsen last year in the belief that it would be eligible for a milling grade should be allowed to deliver existing stocks without being downgraded. However, we advise producers who intend to grow it this spring to be aware that it will be graded as feed in the new crop year," said CGC Assistant Chief Commissioner Terry Harasym.
