U.S. Broiler Hatchery Down on Year

WASHINGTON - Jun 10/09 - SNS -- Broiler hatchery activity in the United States Broiler was down from last year for the seven days finishing June 6, 2009, but managed a mixed performance on the week, reveals the current USDA statistics.

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly program set 204.0 million eggs in incubators during the week. This was down 6.0% from the eggs set the same week last year.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 85%. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier. Broiler Chicks Placed Down 5 Percent Broiler growers in the 19-State weekly program placed 170 million chicks for meat production during the week ending June 6, 2009. Placements were down 5% from the comparable week a year earlier.
