Australia -- Victoria Weather UpdateMELBOURNE - Jun 10/09 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology. for the period until midnight EST Sunday 14 June 2009. Warning Summary at issue time Severe frost warning for the Northern Country, Mallee and Northeast forecast districts. Frost warning for the Wimmera, Western, North Central, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts. Gale warning for Victorian waters between Lakes Entrance and 60nm east of Gabo Island. Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between Wilsons Promontory and Lakes Entrance. Weather Situation A low pressure system is located over the Tasman Sea and is moving slowly eastwards. A high over South Australia will move across New South Wales on Thursday, extending a ridge southwards over Victoria. On Friday another low pressure system will develop over the Bight before drifting towards western Victoria on Saturday and over central Victoria on Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Showers south of the divide with local hail and thunder contracting eastwards. Fine over the northwest but isolated showers at first over the remaining northern plains. Snow showers above 500 metres in the east, rising to 1000 metres in the west. Southwesterly winds slowly easing from the west. Forecast for Thursday Widespread morning frost inland, locally severe. Isolated showers in the south and east, falling as snow in the Alps, contracting eastwards during the day. Cold with generally light and variable winds. Forecast for Friday Isolated showers in the southeast clearing. Patchy rain developing about the western border at night. Early inland frost. Cool with light to moderate northerly winds. Forecast for Saturday Patchy rain extending eastwards but mainly fine in East Gippsland. Snow about the Alps. Early frost in the east. Cool with moderate to fresh north to northwesterly winds. Forecast for Sunday Scattered showers in the north and about the ranges, becoming isolated in the south. Winds generally light to moderate northeast to southeasterly.
