India Mulls Lifting Export BansVANCOUVER - Jun 1/09 - SNS -- The Indian government will start relaxing restrictions on agricultural markets in that country, including the possible lifting of export bans on wheat, rice, pulses and other agricultural commodities. The U.S. agricultural attache for the country reports India's Food and Civil Supplies Ministry is preparing Cabinet notes which would "help the Agriculture Minister pay attention to a pending decision on freeing rice exports." India is looking at a bumper rice harvest and rising wheat stocks. At the same time, the country's pulse industry has complained bitterly that export bans on all pulses, except for kabuli chickpeas, could result in the long term loss of market share in countries which normally look to India to help cover a portion of their needs.
