Cattle on Feed Drops 3 Percent in U.S.
WASHINGTON - May 22/09 - SNS -- Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head came in at 10.8 million head on May 1, 2009, according to today's USDA report.
The inventory was 3% below May 1, 2008.
Placements in feedlots during April totalled 1.60 million, 4% above 2008. Net placements were 1.53 million head.
During April, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 355,000, 600-699 pounds were 315,000, 700-799 pounds were 405,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 525,000.
