2008 Cotton Harvest Sank 33%WASHINGTON - May 12/09 - SNS -- All cotton production is estimated at 12.8 million 480- pounds bales in 2008, down 33% from the 2007 harvest, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. Cottonseed production in 2008 totaled 4.30 million tons, down 35% from last year. Sales to oil mills accounted for 59% of the disposition. The remaining 41% will be used for seed, feed, exports, and various other uses. The 2008 area planted to all cotton totaled 9.47 million acres, down 13% from 2007. Harvested acreage at 7.57 million is down 28% from the previous year. The U.S. all cotton yield averaged 813 pounds per acre, down 66 pounds from last year's record high.
