General Firmness in BirdseedsVANCOUVER - May 8/09 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets finished the week on a generally firm note, helped by normal concerns over seeding progress in the United States and Canada. Sunflower seed markets are helped by concerns plantings in Russia and the Ukraine may be down 20% from last year. The U.S.-based National Sunflower Association notes, "Production in that region was record high in 2008 due to increased acres and superior yields. That impacted U.S. corn oil exports into the Middle East which directly impacted domestic use of NuSun oil. "There is more likelihood that U.S. sunflower acres will be greater than the March intentions report which indicated a 20% anticipated decline.
