Australia -- Queensland Weather UpdateMELBOURNE - May 5/09 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology. IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and St Lawrence. STATE FORECAST for Wednesday A few squally showers along the east coast and over northern Cape York Peninsula spreading into the eastern tropical interior and central interior of the state. Some drizzle areas developing over the south-east interior later today. Fine elsewhere. Generally moderate to fresh SE to E winds. EXTENDED OUTLOOK A ridge of high pressure will persist across southeastern Australia during the week and into the weekend. This ridge will direct mostly moderate to fresh SE winds across the bulk of Queensland. Any strong winds along the east coast will become confined to north of Cooktown during Thursday morning. These onshore SE trade winds will produce showers in most east coastal areas and gradually spread low level moisture westwards. As the moisture spreads westwards cloud will build under an inversion and produce some weak shower and drizzle areas over much of the interior on Thursday. This activity will contract into the southern tropics on Friday. An amplifying upper trough will move into south-west Qld and north-east NSW on Thursday and then persist over the area into the weekend. This trough will produce middle to high cloud with little or no rain over the far north of the state which will spread into the central tropics on Saturday before possibly clearing. Temperatures will be generally near or slightly above the May average over --- STAT News Service
