Australia -- Queensland Weather UpdateMELBOURNE - May 4/09 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology. IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Burnett Heads. STATE FORECAST for Tuesday A few squally showers along the east coast and over northern Cape York Peninsula spreading into the eastern tropical interior during the day. Fine elsewhere. Generally moderate to fresh SE to E winds. EXTENDED OUTLOOK A ridge of high pressure will persist across southeastern Australia during the week and direct mostly moderate to fresh SE winds across the bulk of Queensland. In coastal areas mainly north of about Bowen these winds will be strong at times. These onshore SE trade winds will be moist and produce showers in most coastal areas and these showers will extend into the adjacent inland from Wednesday onwards as the flow shifts a little more E'ly. As well, conditions will become unstable over the southern areas of the state from Wednesday as an amplifying upper trough moves into and across central and south-eastern Australia. So by Thursday these showers will spread into the interior of the state. Isolated thunderstorms will continue through Torres Strait for most of this week due to instability associated with strong SE trade winds. As the upper trough continues to amplify during Thursday and Friday middle to high cloud with little or no rain will initially spread across northern Queensland and then spread southwards into the tropical interior and the central interior of the state by Sunday. During the weekend the rain will become more widespread and heavier as uplift dynamics increases. Temperatures will be generally near or slightly above the May average over --- STAT News Service
