South Africa Sees Bigger Corn CropVANCOUVER - Apr 23/09 - SNS -- Commercial maize or corn production in South Africa is now expected to total 11.202 million metric tons (MT), which is 10,560 MT higher than the previous forecast of 11.191 million MT, according to the latest crop report from the South African Grain Information Service (SAGIS). The area estimate for maize is 2.422 million hectares, which is 1,200 hectares more than the 2.421 million hectares of the previous forecast. The production forecast of white maize is 6.542 million MT, which is 5,060 MT more than the 6.537 million MT of the previous forecast. The area estimate for white maize shows a slight increase of 200 hectares to 1.489 million hectares. The expected yield for white maize is 4,390 kilograms per hectare. In the case of yellow maize the production forecast is 4.659 million MT, which is 5,500 MT more than the 4.654 million MT of the previous forecast. The area estimate for yellow maize was increased by a 1,000 hectares to 933,500 hectares. The expected yield of yellow maize is 4,990 kilograms per hectare.
