Australia -- Queensland Weather UpdateMELBOURNE - Mar 10/09 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology. IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY 1. A severe weather warning is current for coastal and island communities between Sandy Cape and Coolangatta. 2. A wind warning is current for coastal waters between Yeppoon and Point Danger. 3. Flood warnings are current for the Lower Diamantina River and Eyre Creek. STATE FORECAST for the rest of Wednesday and Thursday Squally showers tending to rain at times about coastal districts south of Gladstone. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and western districts, increasing over the Channel Country and Warrego on Thursday. Fine elsewhere. Strong to gale force SE to E winds and dangerous surf about the exposed coast and islands between Yeppoon and Coolangatta. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. EXTENDED OUTLOOK Tropical Cyclone Hamish has sheared leaving an exposed low level centre, which has started to drift back towards the NW under the influence of the high near Tasmania. So by Friday the remnants of Hamish will be located just east of Rockhampton. Moderate to locally heavy falls may occur on the southern side of the low near the coast and in adjacent inland areas. An upper trough will move across the south-east of the state on Friday and may temporarily enhance the shower activity near the southern border on Friday afternoon. This upper trough will pass seawards overnight Friday. As a result only a few showers will occur about the south-east of the state on Saturday and Sunday and then mainly near the coast. Over the north of the state the shower and storm activity will move northwards during Thursday and then become confined to the Peninsula and Gulf areas from Friday onwards as drier low level air pushes northwards. A few showers and storms will occur over the west of the state on Thursday due to the passage of the upper trough. In the wake of the upper trough fine weather will be the order --- STAT News Service
