Australia -- Queensland Weather UpdateMELBOURNE - Mar 10/09 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology. IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY 1. A severe weather warning for coastal and island communities between Sandy Cape and Coolangatta. 2. A wind warning for coastal waters between Yeppoon and Point Danger. 3. Flood warnings are current for the Lower Diamantina River and Eyre Creek. STATE FORECAST for Tuesday night and Wednesday Rain and shower areas about the southern coasts. Showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and over parts of the west of the state. Generally fine elsewhere with isolated showers over parts of the eastern interior. Strong to gale force SE to E winds and dangerous surf about the exposed coast and islands between Fraser Island and Coolangatta. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. EXTENDED OUTLOOK Tropical Cyclone Hamish is expected to slow down and gradually weaken over the next day or so before moving slowly north-westwards as a decaying low. At the same time the high over the Bight area will move into the Tasman Sea and continue to move eastwards reaching the New Zealand area on Saturday. The remains of Tropical Cyclone Hamish will spread rain and shower activity across most of the south-east on Thursday. Some moderate to heavy falls will occur with this rain especially near the low. This rain and shower activity will continue through Friday as an upper trough moves into the south-east of the state. This upper trough will pass seawards overnight Friday. As a result only a few showers will occur about the south-east of the state on Saturday and Sunday and then mainly near the coast. Over the north of the state the shower and storm activity will move northwards during Thursday and then become confined to the Peninsula and Gulf areas from Friday onwards. A few showers and storms will occur over the west of the state on Thursday due to the passage of the upper trough. In the wake of the upper trough fine weather will be the order of the day into and through the weekend. --- STAT News Service
