Pork Production Sets RecordWASHINGTON - Feb 21/03 - SNS -- Pork slaughter reached new record levels in the United States in January, with the USDA estimating total output jumped 2% above year earlier levels to 1.75 million pounds. In its latest report on commercial red meat production, the USDA noted 8.79 million hogs were slaughtered last month, 1% above January 2002. The average live weight was 268 pounds, unchanged from January a year ago. Total commercial red meat production for the United States totaled 4.08 billion pounds in January, relatively unchanged from a year ago. Beef production, at 2.29 billion pounds, was 2% below the previous year. Cattle slaughter totaled 3.01 million head, down 2% from January 2002.
